Grant A Wish During Sarcoma Awareness Month

July 1, 2014

July is National Sarcoma Awareness Month, and because sarcoma is so common in childhood, it is important to know the signs and symptoms. Thankfully, Make-A-Wish helps to grant the wishes of children with sarcoma and other medical conditions so that children and their families can partake in a life-changing event to bring them hope and strength once again.

If you would like to play a part in helping to grant a wish for a child with sarcoma this July during National Sarcoma Awareness Month, consider a car donation to Wheels For Wishes, benefiting Make-A-Wish.

Know The Signs Of Sarcoma In Children

Fifteen percent of children with childhood cancers suffer from sarcoma, and about 25 percent of children with sarcomas have soft tissue sarcoma. There are several signs and symptoms of soft tissue sarcoma in childhood, and it is important to be aware of any symptoms that your child may be experiencing. However, most signs or symptoms may be painless. A sarcoma is commonly found as a painless lump or swelling in soft tissues on the body and may appear as a painless lump under the skin. A lump could be found on the arm or leg, but a child could have no other symptoms at first.

When the sarcoma grows, it may cause symptoms such as weakness or pain. If you spot a swelling or lump on your child, it’s best to take them in to get it looked at. A physical exam, x-ray, CT scan and MRI can be completed to determine whether or not the sarcoma is cancerous. If the tests do show a soft tissue sarcoma, a biopsy may be completed, followed up by a laboratory test to study the tissue samples.

Other types of childhood sarcomas include pediatric sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcomas, osteosarcoma, and Ewing’s sarcoma. Pediatric sarcomas typically come in one of three types which include rhabdomyosarcomas, osteosarcoma, and Ewing’s sarcoma, but pediatric sarcoma can also occur in adults. Rhabdomyosarcomas are one of the most common types of soft tissue sarcoma and are tumors in the skeletal muscle. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer and Ewing’s sarcoma is cancer that occurs in the bone, but can also occur in soft tissues.

Give Back To A Child This July

Being a child can already be difficult enough, especially once you reach adolescence. A car donation can help a child take a break from their medical condition by having their wish granted, all thanks to Make-A-Wish. Wheels For Wishes is a car donation program benefiting Make-A-Wish, so you can help to fund wishes when you donate a car to charity. Plus, your donation is tax-deductible and only takes a few moments of your time. Simply call us at 1-855-278-9474 or make your donation online.

On average, Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child every 38 minutes. Car donation can allow a child to become one of the Wish Kids who receives their wish granted. A wish granted helps to provide a child with a lifetime of memories. However, your help is needed. The average cost of a wish was $8,141 in 2012, and your car donation to Wheels For Wishes can help with the funding of a wish.

Call us today to make your vehicle donation and feel great about putting an unwanted vehicle to better use. Your car, truck, boat, or motorcycle will be picked up or towed away at absolutely no cost to you, even if the vehicle no longer runs. We accept vehicles in most conditions, but don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions regarding the vehicle you would like to donate. We are here to help you make wishes come true, especially during the month of July when we think of children battling sarcoma and help them receive their greatest wish.
